My 2 yr old son and I take recycling out every morning

and I always discard all lids from bottles. Most recycling centers don't recycles lids and ones with lids usually get discarded into the trash

Actually, yesterday I was talking to a friend about how recycling centers discard all that is not recyclable, and they don't separate what it could recycle. Bottles with lids are an excellent example. They should improve their selection process and most important is that we need to seek for more education in recycling.
Did you know that Aluminum is infinitely recyclable, so ALWAYS recycle cans.
